The 110,000-square-foot laboratory-office buildings Tarlton built for Wexford Science & Technology LLC is one of three finalists for a Keystone Award in the new Sustainable Construction category. The awards, sponsored annually by the Associated General Contractors of St. Louis, recognize excellence in construction with an emphasis on overcoming challenges to achieve successful project delivery.
The four-story structure on the campus of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center provides emerging companies with customized wet labs and office space, coupled with access to leading researchers at the Danforth Center, the world's largest independent plant science research facility. Lab Building 1 is the first of three buildings planned for BRDG Park, which ultimately will encompass 450,000 square feet. Built in accordance with LEED Core & Shell requirements, the building opened in June 2009 and was certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council in January 2010.
Sustainability in design and construction brings a 17.5% energy savings to building operations. Recycling initiatives during construction were exemplary, and the completed building has many features that contribute to the good health and comfort of the researchers, educators and support staff who work there. Through separate contracts, Tarlton also built out five interior tenant spaces for tenants of the new building.
Finalists in all Keystone categories were announced at a luncheon June 21 and will be recognized again at a dinner in the fall, when the winners will be named. Tarlton has received several Keystone awards over the years, most recently for projects for the Saint Louis Zoo and St. Louis University High School.
