PROJECT NOTES
Tarlton served as General Contractor for this phased, 73,100 sf renovation project. The team provided upgrades to and within the Old Courthouse, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis.
Targeted areas began with the removal of the mechanical wheelchair lift and replacing it with two ramp structures to improve universal access to both the east and west main entrances.
Once inside the facility, ensuring universal access to exhibit galleries, court rooms and the Park’s library guided many additional improvements. Small ramps and transition platforms were installed throughout the facility to achieve this goal. While accessibility has been significantly enhanced, some areas remain unchanged due to the extent of historic fabric and the reengineering required. Two new elevators now provide access to the second floor, allowing visitors to experience the library, east court room, and the rotunda.
To meet current building code requirements for life, health, and safety, this project included the addition of smoke evacuation equipment, upgraded controls, and a new fire suppression system. The facility’s heating and air conditioning systems were replaced with energy-efficient technology, and windows were rebuilt or replaced to further enhance efficiency. To improve experience accessibility, a family restroom was added, the museum store was relocated, and office spaces were renovated and reconfigured to maximize universal access.
