PROJECT NOTES

This Tarlton project on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th floors of the BJC Institute of Health at Washington University School of Medicine allowed for the relocation and consolidation of the WU Departments of Surgery/Pathology, Core Lab (Hematology, Cytology and Toxicology),Blood Bank, Cryopreservation, Histology, Microbiology, Clinical Genomics, Molecular Diagnostics, Fish Lab and Administration.

Work included fitting out the 2nd floor pharmacy projection area and the continuation of the pneumatic tube system, major structural upgrades to handle carousel equipment systems. The 4th floor laboratory work required significant integration of a series of custom lab automation lines. Work consisted of a new BSL3 area, the infrastructure to support Floors 2-6, including new electrical systems, five air handling units and laboratory gas equipment. Two new passenger elevators were installed.

The team employed sustainable building practices and took care to avoid disruption in and around the building, which was operational during construction. Building Information Modeling proved useful during preconstruction, aiding in subcontractor coordination and helping the team complete the project two months earlier than originally scheduled.

Challenges included building on a busy health care campus with heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and safely using cranes to hoist materials and equipment into the building.

In addition to this project, Tarlton, in a W/MBE joint venture with Interface Construction, later fit out lab space on IOH Floors 3 and 4. That project included demolition, MEP rough-ins, a mechanical upgrade, emergency generator and architectural finishes.
