PROJECT NOTES

Working as a specialty concrete contractor, Tarlton successfully managed the construction of a mass concrete vault for POINTCORE Construction and OSF HealthCare in Peoria, Illinois, to contain the radiation emitted from proton therapy cancer treatment.

The vault is formed by a mat slab that is 3 feet thick and mass concrete walls more than 7 feet thick (including one section that is 24 feet thick), topped by a structural roof slab between 6 and 8 feet thick. The concrete is reinforced by #4 to #10 rebar.

The vault footprint is 98 feet by 48 feet, and the structure is 33 feet tall. It is completely below grade and cannot be seen from the outside. It measures 4,704 gross square feet, only one-quarter of which is open space. The rest is filled with concrete placed during 20 different pours averaging 245 cubic yards, the largest of which was 700 cubic yards. In total, approximately 4,520 cubic yards of concrete was placed.
