Tartlon has successfully completed several Zoo projects, demonstrating the keen interest and pride we take in the city's cultural institutions and attractions. We built the Penguin & Puffin Coast, the Donn and Marilyn Lipton Fragile Forest, and the Edward K. Love Conservation Foundation Cypress Swamp, completed improvements to the train system, installed the Mary Ann Lee Conservation Carousel and renovated the 1904 World’s Fair Flight Cage, the country's largest outdoor aviary.
Tarlton provided preconstruction, value engineering and construction services for Penguin & Puffin Coast, a unique indoor/outdoor exhibit. Project challenges included confined work spaces, the simultaneous care demanded by animals and zoo visitors, safety concerns and a fast-paced construction schedule. The facility contains highly complex mechanical and electrical systems, life safety systems for the animals and extensive artistic rock work to simulate the animals’ natural environments.
The Fragile Forest, an outdoor summer habitat for apes, also required creative solutions and careful execution. The project received a Keystone Award from the Associated General Contractors of St. Louis.
