This project relocated and consolidated professional services of the Washington University Department of Pathology including Anatomic and Molecular Pathology as well as Laboratory and Genomic Medicine, and the laboratory operations and administrative functions of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, including the Molecular Diagnostics and the Cryopreservation labs. It was completed on the 5th floor of the BJC Institute of Health at Washington University School of Medicine.
Tarlton also completed work in the Siteman Cancer Center biorepository and provided the infrastructure to support Floors 2-6, including new electrical systems, five air handling units and laboratory gas equipment. Two new passenger elevators were installed.
The team employed sustainable building practices and took great care to avoid disruption in and around the building, which was operational during construction. Building Information Modeling proved useful during preconstruction, aiding in subcontractor coordination and helping the team complete the project two months earlier than originally scheduled. Challenges included building on a busy health care campus with heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and safely using cranes to hoist materials and equipment into the building.
In addition to this project, Tarlton, in a W/MBE joint venture with Interface Construction, later fit out lab space on IOH Floors 3 and 4. That project included demolition, MEP rough-ins, a mechanical upgrade, emergency generator and architectural finishes.
